Every year a number of families lose their homes because of fires caused by carelessness with electricity or faulty electrical wiring and equipment in their homes. To often this can result in serious injury or death. By checking your home for electrical fire hazards, and making the necessary corrections, the risk of fires can be significantly reduced.
Periodically check for electrical problems around the home. Some typical hazards are using extension cords in place of permanent wiring, and frayed or damaged lamp and appliance cords.
Keep combustible materials like paper, clothes or curtains far enough away from heat-producing electrical devices such as portable heaters, irons and kitchen appliances.
Every house and apartment should have smoke detectors located in places like the family or recreation room, hallways and corridors serving bedrooms. It's also a good idea to have at least one multipurpose dry chemical fire extinguisher handy in case of emergencies.
Never use water on grease or electrical fires.
Once or twice a year you should check switches and outlets throughout your house for any sign of heat coming from the device. If they are found to be warm to the palm of the hand, have them checked and replaced immediately.
Have family escape routes planned for all areas of your home.
Have rescue equipment such as rope ladders for upper windows ready, and know how to use them.
Keep emergency numbers close to your telephone.
