Why Do We Have Power Interruptions?

Grimsby Power attempts to notify customers in advance of any planned/scheduled interruptions. These types of interruptions are due to the disconnection at a selected time for the purpose of construction or preventative maintenance.

However, many customers have probably wondered, "Why do we have power interruptions or momentary outages"? There are a number of reasons as to why there are power failures. Some of the known causes with their explanations are as follows:

Loss of Supply
Interruptions due to problems in the bulk electricity system on the transmission circuit.
Tree Contacts
Interruptions caused by faults resulting from tree contact with energized circuits.
Lightning
Interruptions due to lightning striking the distribution system, resulting in an insulation breakdown and/or flashovers. Lightning may even occur outside our community, but could affect our Town.
Adverse Weather
Interruptions resulting from rain, ice storms, winds, extreme temperatures, freezing fog, frost or other extreme weather conditions. Sometimes adverse weather can weaken our system unknowingly to us causing a power outage days/weeks later.
Foreign Interference
Intermissions beyond the control of the utility such as animals, vehicles, dig-ins, vandalism, sabotage and foreign objects.
Defective Equipment
Interruptions resulting from equipment failures due to deterioration from age, incorrect maintenance, or imminent failures detected by maintenance.

When these disturbances occur, please be assured that the built-in safety features in the electrical mechanisms protect our customers and our hydro equipment. Sometimes these safety features result in the power going off for a second and then it comes back on. This delay allows the problem to clear and prevents long power interruptions.

We want to assure our customers that Grimsby Power uses due diligence to avoid such matters, but unfortunately, the system doesn't allow a 100% guarantee for power.
